A Brief History
 

Early explorers wondered why the south sea island natives didn’t get any of the infectious white man diseases that the American Indians, and others, had.  In fact, they never seemed to get any colds or flues either!  That is, until some of the natives started eating a western diet.  Then they would get sick (while natives on native diets still did not).  That narrowed the search to diet but it wasn’t until much later that they narrowed it to one food – coconut oil.
 
Eventually, scientists discovered that coconut oil was about 52% lauric acid and suspected that lauric acid was the magic bullet.  However, testing lauric acid on bacteria, while showing some antibacterial results, didn’t produce quite the results expected.

Fast-forward to recent history and the truth started coming out.  A Dr. Kabara, a professor at both Universities of Detroit and Michigan State for over 20 years, started specializing in the drug-like effects of fatty acids.  With specialties in pharmacology and biochemistry, Dr Kabara discovered the anti-microbial effects of fatty acids in mother's milk. 
 
It just so happens that lauric acid is one of those fatty acids!  What Dr. Kabara also discovered – and what is really important to us - is that the body converts some of the lauric acid in coconut oil into a monoglyceride called monolaurin (sound familiar)? 
 
Even more important, it is this monolaurin that is the powerful germ-fighter.  
 
Monolaurin was tested on bacteria and it killed 100% of every bacterium it was tested on – including MRSA!  It was even effective against many viruses including:

How Does It Do It?
 
The way monolaurin kills bacteria is really interesting for those that are curious.  All bacteria (and some viruses) have a very flimsy, lipid fat molecule envelopes (skin).  This is by design so the bacterium and virus can easily penetrate its targets.  As it so happens, monolaurin has the same size lipid fat molecule so it absorbs into the bacteria’s skin. 
 
Unfortunately for the bacteria, monolaurin doesn’t have very good binding power.  The skin envelopes, already loosely held together, begins to break apart.  The cells burst open and die.  Then the white blood cells takes the debris to the liver where it is eliminated from the body.  Your body is much happier and it’s a good deal for everyone - but the bacteria and viruses!
